Day Four
This morning, we left for some fun at the beach on our way to our next stop in the Bronx. We stopped for some swimming, sunning and picnicking at Sherwood State Park in Connecticut. The beach was nice and sandy, with a very gradual slope, so we could go out in the water a long ways and still touch bottom. The downside was a few sharp rocks and seashell fragments that left a lot of feet in need of some minor bandaging. Several pale Minnesotans also developed some sunburn.
Then, it was on to the Lutheran Church of the Epiphany in the Bronx. Our intrepid driver, Arnie, negotiated many narrow one-way streets with the bus and parallel parked it right in front of the church. I was careful to remind the kids to unload all of their things from the bus, as we would not see it again for 2 days. After unloading and setting up, we set about cleaning the church. Soon, many hands were scrubbing floors, polishing pews and pulling weeds.
Afterwards, we fixed tacos for supper and it was about this time that I went to buy myself more toothpaste, a toothbrush, soap, etc. to replace those I had forgotten with my bags on the bus and would not see for 2 days. New Wine had another solid performance, although the kids were a little wilted from the heat. Because of the heat, we left the sanctuary doors open and the audience gradually grew as people passing by heard the music. The audience gave the group another standing ovation, and then a very nice lady who is a friend of the church insisted on treating the entire group (yes, all 59 of us) to authentic New York pizza, calzones, and pasta at Sal’s Pizza across the street. Despite having eaten tacos earlier, we still devoured an impressive quantity of these local delicacies.
