Day Two
Everyone was up early. After cereal, we were packed and on the way with a healthy bus once again. We did a quick driving tour of Chicago and saw the Sears and Hancock Towers, Lake Michigan and the Wrigley Building. Alas, we didn’t get much of a look at Soldier Field, home of Da Bears. Sorry, Brian.
Then, it was a long day of driving. We stopped a couple of times at service areas for lunch and driving breaks, and arrived at St. John Lutheran Church in Clearville, PA around 7:30. We were greeted by the pastor and his family, and a “Welcome New Wine” sign attached to a big box of homemade lollipops. A game of street Frisbee and parking lot soccer quickly developed, while supper was prepared. The soccer ball became lodged in an overhead set of power lines, so they threw shoes and other balls at it to dislodge it. Soon, there were two balls lodged in the overhead power lines. Finally, a near hit by a basketball shook the lines and the balls were retrieved. The pastor showed us a room full of drums that we were welcome to use. We’re talking a lot of drums. A bunch of the Winers formed a very loud, but fun drum circle.
After supper, several impromptu jam sessions were held, and we had an Olympics with three legged races, bubble gum blowing and racing while holding a grapefruit between the knees. The kitchen also had many large, deep sinks, so much hair washing was accomplished. After devotions and footnotes, we slept in the sanctuary. Air conditioning two nights in a row!!!
